Rude Online Behavior

So – I have been making small excursions into Facebook – mostly to catch-up with old friends from my “past lives”. I decided to join a group – BYU Alumni – should be a safe group, right? Well, whoever is “in charge” of the group posted an old picture of cheerleaders. The first comment was about how different the uniforms were – long sleeves, very modest – the poster thought they were “sweet”. Someone else quickly replied “Modesty like all good priciples can be taken too far. Unfortunately too many members become obsessed with it and turn it into a gospel hobby.” I replied “really, you can take modesty too far?” That was enough for someone else to turn into a raving maniac. This person took the first comment as an implication that today’s uniforms are not modest (something the first poster never said) and that I was advocating the wearing of burkhas. When someone else mentioned that today’s uniforms made them uncomfortable because they were so brief, this person attacked them saying that the cheerleaders were good people and since BYU is run by the Church, this person’s opinion was WRONG. Silly me, I made a comment about how things sure had gotten heated. This person listed all the ways in which our comments were attacks on BYU for immodesty (I’m pretty sure I didn’t have anything at all to say about modesty for BYU cheerleaders – I was commenting on the idea that modesty can become a “hobby horse” for members of the Church. Haven’t really seen that – though I’ve seen plenty of people struggling to maintain modesty in the face of current fashion). Why is it that some people feel that if someone disagrees with them, it is an attack, but if they disagree with someone else they are just “defending”. This person made HUGE assumptions about people’s positions based on fairly innocuous comments and then got all huffy. Why is this acceptable?? It’s making me think I should just get out of the group. Who knows what I might say next that will draw this person’s ire?
