Suburban Wildlife

Where we live there are big swathes of open space. They are aesthetically nice to have because there are all these walking paths, though they are probably really more for flood control. Either way, they are bands of wild country in the midst of lawn and houses. We know there are wildlife -the bunnies are ubiquitous and the coyote yips always accompany the beginning of spring. But sightings are always exciting. Just when you think you’ll never see one again, you catch sight of a fox darting across the road or running along a fence line. I’ll always remember the morning we were out walking and came across a coyote pouncing in the tall grass after some smaller prey.  Petty cool. This morning I got proof that even bigger animals hang out in these deceptively empty green spaces.

As we continued along the path we came face to face with a doe and then noticed a string of them to our right coming out from behind some shrubbery. Awesome!

‘Course it can’t compare to the blood curdling shrieks that woke us a few years ago.  Apparently foxes can make these calls that sounds like screams. That was an interesting night!
