Homeschooling, Me??

So, after a frustrating few months where Andrew has done less and less well at controlling his impulse to hit others when frustrated, and where school interventions (and home interventions) haven’t seemed to make the least bit of difference …

We’re trying something new.  Andrew is going to begin homeschooling on Wednesday (school wants him to finish his CSAP testing first).  It’s a temporary fix – just to get him to the end of the school year.  In addition, we are pursuing some therapy to see if we can help him figure out some better ways to deal with being frustrated – and maybe a social skills class.  But enough about Andrew …

What about ME???  Am I crazy???  This is the kid that can make me crazy five minutes after he’s woken up.  This is the kid that sucks up all the attention and energy I have and still wants more.  This is the kid that fights me every step of every way.  Should be interesting …

I’ve made up a nice, organized schedule.  I’ve done a little hunting around the internet for suggestions and resources.  I’m conflicted about curriculum because we are essentially at the end of the year.  The school will be sending home his workbooks for math, grammar, and spelling.  That still leaves everything else (including instruction for these subjects because the workbooks are just that – not textbooks).  Still need to go to the local library and see if they have some resources for curriculum.  Anyone out there with great ideas?  Someone that has some experience?  I read a really interesting article that advocated just having your kids read – especially really good literature – and eventually they will become learners as their interests are peaked.  Doesn’t seem to quite fit our circumstances, but still interesting.

Pray for me, everyone!  Pray for Andrew too …

Wow, I admire you! Yet, I know of a few families who homeschool, and seem to do well with it. I’m sorry you’re still struggling with Andrew. I remember when I volunteered in his kindergarten class, he wore me out too! 😉 Yet, I remember thinking, “He’s a smart kid. He just needs help to get going in the right direction…” I know he couldn’t be in a better place–or with a better mom! You and your husband are such a blessing in your children’s lives 🙂 I wish you all the luck, and I will totally pray for you!

      Hey Johanna
I would talk to Jen Lemon. She’s the master at homeschooling. As far as looking for textbooks, I would try eBay.

Adrie – you are sweet! Thanks for the vote of confidence.
Susan – I will definitely talk to Jen. I’m wondering if it is worth buying a bunch of texts for such a short time? (I’m really hoping he will be ready to go back to school in the fall). But that is a good suggestion and I will go take a look.
