I received a book recently that I was invited to review and I enjoyed it so much that I thought I’d post about it.  The book is called Learn to Study the Bible and it is filled with 40 different methods to approach the study of scripture.  While this book is written to a general Christian audience, anyone who is studying sacred writings will find methods in this book that invite pondering and serious thinking about the principles found therein. One of my favorite methods is also the simplest.  It’s called “Six Searches”.  You pick a passage of scripture to read – a verse, a chapter, even a book.  Then, answer the following questions: 1)What did you like? 2)What didn’t you like? 3)What didn’t you understand? 4)What did you learn about God? 5)What should you do? 6)What phrase can you take with...

Tom & I had a surprise night in downtown Denver last night.   My brother, Andrew, had a free night at the Westin Hotel and very kindly gave it to us (he thought he had to pay us back or something for watching his kids last weekend!).  It was so fun to have a random get-away.  To avoid parking, we rode the light-rail downtown and took the free 16th St. Mall bus right to the hotel.  Very luxurious place!  I should have taken pictures!  But here are a couple from their website: Our room was very comfortable and had a terrific view of downtown.  We took advantage of being downtown to visit “The Old Spaghetti Factory” (which we never get to eat at because it is so far away).  The hotel is located on Lawrence St., which is where the restaurant is also – just a couple of blocks away on 18th.  But we were totally...

I read this on facebook this past week: ” [facebook user] believes that no one should die because they cannot afford health care, and no one should go broke because they get sick. If you agree, please post this as your status for the rest of the day” I keep thinking about this philosophy – and I finally decided, why stop with health care?  How about “I believe that no one should have to work at a demeaning job.  No one should have to suffer a broken heart.  No one should have to have to suffer through a natural disaster and there should be someone else to do the clean-up if said disaster has the nerve to go ahead and happen.  No one should ever have to die in an accident.” I could go on and on, but the point is – life happens.  We don’t like many of the things that happen.  People die all the...

Last Sunday Spencer made his first appearance in church playing the cello.  Jen Cottle, who is currently in charge of music for her ward (congregation), asked Spencer if he would prepare a hymn to play.  He really didn’t want to do it, but Tom and I ganged up on him.   Originally Tom thought he would play the Ensemble part, but eventually we all decided to ask Spencer’s teacher to come and play with him.  I had the dubious honor of accompanying on the piano.  My piano is pretty rusty, sorry to say.  I worked on the piece (and it really wasn’t that challenging) and felt that I could do a decent job of it.  Don’t discount the effect of “performance”.  I started out beautifully and then started shaking!!  At one point I thought, “can I really make it through this whole piece??” (and it...
